Politicians who confront opponents within the domain of public conversations recognize certain rhetorical elements to be efficient and persuasive in conveying a particular message. Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter had a debate regarding the matter of nuclear safety and necessary political regulations. Both Reagan and Carter presented their opinions on the situation, and ways to resolve a possible conflict between two states. In order to express their thoughts and feelings clearly, the speakers implemented such rhetorical means as examples and analogies. It may be stated that the chosen figures of speech make it more vivid, enable the speaker to articulate his or her views explicitly and convince the audience. The paper focuses on these items of figurative language and evaluates their effectiveness as written in samedayessay reviews.

In order to analyze examples and analogies, these terms have to be defined. Examples are specific facts, ideas, or things that are used to illustrate or support a case. They appeal to the general audience as they emphasize a thought using a familiar and recognizable situation that is referred to by the speaker. Analogies are drawn to make a comparison between ideas, people, or things. These literal parallels are built on associations. Therefore, analogies may receive emotional responses and are effective when explaining a subject. It should be noted that analogies are applied to simplify the matter in hand, while examples are used to communicate the message and explain its main features. Additionally, examples and analogies help to develop a perspective and view it from different angles. In order to succeed, examples and analogies have to be relevant and develop a topic under discussion.

This example is introduced to stress the importance of the question under consideration and influence the voters’ decision formed by the debate. It is not enough to refer to the nuclear weapon as a dangerous thing and Carter wants people to understand the scope of the threat. Such an approach presents a persuasive piece of evidence as it focuses on nuclear weapons as a formidable force implying that certain actions need to be taken to avoid such negative consequences.

This example was a means used to refute Reagan’s analogy which was the following: “I sometimes think that he’s like the witch doctor that gets mad when a good doctor comes along with a cure that’ll work.” Here, there is a contrast between the notions of good and evil that implies that the actions of Carter are impractical and bring no results. Reagan understands that he and Carter cannot both be right and tries to discredit his opponent and lower his level of authority. In this case, the analogy achieves the desired effect as it also focuses on the idea that Reagan’s methods will work just as a cure of a good doctor.

The analyzed example and analogy are the forms of rhetorical figures that are used to make a speech more persuasive and convince the opponent. Examples and analogies are incorporated to illustrate the major ideas. If properly used, these two elements explain the matter in hand and make people comprehend complicated thoughts. Reagan and Carter managed to implement examples and analogies into their speeches and to some extent invalidate the thoughts of the opponent. It should be mentioned that, without these means of figurative language, their debate would not have been so intense and productive.
