Active informatization of all the spheres of modern society is a process characteristic for the turn of the 19-20th century. This period witnessed a rapid rise in new information technologies, especially in the sphere of media. The electronic environment of communication and the media are developing in tandem, which provides transformation of the global media system and affects the expansion of communication channels. In turn, these changes have a significant impact on the development of society. Today, social media present a limitless flow of information and open new possibilities, which are restricted only by a person’s desires. Due to the development of social media, the life of an informational consumer has changed. There is no need for physical meetings thanks to the availability of the Internet. It is not necessary to hold a multi-volume encyclopedia on the shelves or store information on disk or in memory, as everything is available online. Children try to push the fingers to increase the pictures and pages of paper books as they used to do this on their parents’ tablets. The paper book becomes the object of prestigious consumption, indicative behavior, and the subject of collectibles. The development of social media is one of the key points in the development of communicative relations. Modern means of communication are becoming more sophisticated by the complexity of the primary processes. The very role and influence of the media in the society are growing at an incredible pace, acting as a comprehensive means of human exploration of the world in its social, psychological, and intellectual aspects. Nevertheless, it is important to note that social media influences daily life not only in a positive way. Thus, despite the advantages that social media brings to society, it negatively affects the development of both societies as a whole and an individual.

Advantages of Social Media

The Internet has entered people’s daily lives and changed traditional ways of communicating, reporting, and collecting information. Today, the Internet is an integral part of the social space. With it, not only do people communicate, but they also make purchases, spend leisure time for online games, watch movies, listen to music, place promotional offers, etc. Thus, the role of social networks is steadily increasing in modern society, since one of their main features is interactivity and freedom from the power vertical. Talpa states that social media provides a dynamic communication because it represents a free flow that allows the exchange of information. There are also other important features of these social media that make them relevant. They include the ability to carry out social, political, and campaign activities comprising feedback mechanisms; the ability to respond quickly to the citizens' requests coming directly through a social network; the ability to influence political and social processes in the society; the ability to allocate leaders; open access to the social content located on the data pages of the Internet resources. Kasturi and Vardhan argue that social media has become important in social life because of its prominent features such as interactivity and ubiquity. Ubiquity means that media technologies influence everyone in the societies they are employed.

Today, social networks are gradually turning into the newest social institution both with consequent inherent features and specific characteristics that are unique to the services. They could unite entire regions, countries, and continents on the same page. Among the reasons relating social network to a new social institution, there is the presence of a particular structure and organization of the network; availability of the general functions for all social institutions – societal needs; possibility of regulation of social processes taking place within the network; the presence of social groups and social organizations designed to meet the needs of groups and individuals; the possibility of economic activities within the network; and integration of social networks in the socio-political life of society. Today, as opposed to non-virtual media, social networks are characterized by relative freedom of speech, freedom of utterance of different points of view on almost any subject. Social networks can and should be used effectively in different private areas not only in order to establish contacts and communication but also for information, interaction with scientists, politicians, and officials, performing scientific, social, and political activities. Talpa emphasizes that the power in the social media “lies in the hands of the user”, as a person can easily spread their ideas and opinions to the entire world. Social networks can be called a kind of virtual mirror of life, which reflects both urgent problems that present concern to the society and opinions and evaluations of the society in the context of current issues.

With the advent of social media, books have begun to perform the function of the physical interpretation: they are bought to be shown and flipped through. All newspapers, magazines, TV and radio programs offer a definitely formed set of articles and reviews which the user cannot change. Social media radically change this tendency. Today, the news feed on Facebook or LiveJournal is true media, as they fully reflect the interests of the people. Moreover, friends make news with a selection of links to interesting articles and blogs on social media. People are more confident in what their acquaintances recommend them than in the information that comes from promotion channels.

Electronic books are able to reduce the problematic gap between theoretical knowledge and its application in practice. Furthermore, game elements that will set the spirit of competition that can lead to excellent results could be implemented in these books. Through gamification, the process of learning becomes visible and motivated.

Moreover, social media have a tremendous effect on education. Online interaction might provide learners flexibility, stimulate more innovative ideas, and facilitate learning. Many Western and American universities use social media to organize the learning process. Most often, common pages on social media and video on YouTube are created in order to motivate students to answer questions and to bring graduates together. In addition, universities are asked to mark students in the application of Facebook Places, so that this information appears in the news. This is a good advertisement for the institution. In addition to social networks, many universities use YourCampus360 applications to create virtual tours of campuses on Facebook pages. Some universities and schools use Skype for learning foreign languages, as one of the beneficial sides of this method is the high motivation of socializing with friends from different countries. Typically, universities carry out an internal newsletter by e-mail and post the required documents on special boards.

Negative Impact of Social Media

With the gradual development of the Internet, there is a change of people’s perception of the information and gradual expansion of the information field. Humanity spends more time on the Internet, which means that a person transfers their perception of the world and their consciousness to the virtual world. People derive in the vast global network, where they leave information about what is happening outside the screen. Social networks are the main source of any information, such as interests, place of work or study, contacts, etc. Social media affect many life factors. Despite providing equal access to information, they can exacerbate intergroup inequality because of homophily that reinforces differences due to individual advantages.

A lot of users of social media have psychological problems. The reason is the addiction that changes the human’s brain, affecting those areas that control emotional processes, concentration, and are responsible for making decisions. The brain loses its ability to control distractions and interference.

Moreover, Derbyshire emphasizes that social media harm children’s brain, causing alarming changes that have negative consequences in their future development. The frequent use of social media worsens a person's ability in this area, rendering them unable to filter out distracting information. A person cannot concentrate on a particular task and perform it to the end, which, in turn, interferes with productive work on the objectives. A person ceases to believe in themselves or refuses to perform the tasks. They pay more time to watch the lives of their friends, relatives, and co-workers. Engelberg states that social media are negatively related to inter-personal skills, cause loneliness and low social adjustment in the sphere of balance between leisure and work. There is a gradual degradation in the context of personal development. Moreover, there are many counter-arguments for the statement about the usefulness of social media in education. Thus, the virtual life of student destructs his thoughts from education towards other activities and by living inside a fantasy world student slowly starts to hate educated life and studies.

Social media can re-adjust the nervous system. It contributes to more selfish behavior. The use of social media increases the amount of dopamine that is released in the body. Most of the time spent on social media is used by a person to satisfy their own interests, tell the story about themselves. The body adapts to it, making narcissism be a norm.

The society is moving toward globalization by setting new standards of communication. It can be said that the issue of informatization of society is a philosophical question, a problem that affects the values and phenomena of the surrounding world, the goals and ideals of human life itself. Social media are tightly integrated into people’s lives and take a dominant level in the development of the individual and society. Such social networks as Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest have become one of the main tools for sharing and receiving news. However, it should not be forgotten that with the advent of this type of communication, there has been a change not only in the way of communication, but also in people, their attitudes, and ultimately life. Because of their availability, range, and speed of propagation, modern social media have a huge effect. It is a technology that strives to think instead of people, own their minds, and control their actions. Also, you can read a <span data-sheets-value="{"1":2,"2":"rogerian argument essay example"}" data-sheets-userformat="{"2":10813,"3":{"1":0},"5":{"1":[{"1":2,"2":0,"5":[null,2,0]},{"1":0,"2":0,"3":3},{"1":1,"2":0,"4":1}]},"6":{"1":[{"1":2,"2":0,"5":[null,2,0]},{"1":0,"2":0,"3":3},{"1":1,"2":0,"4":1}]},"7":{"1":[{"1":2,"2":0,"5":[null,2,0]},{"1":0,"2":0,"3":3},{"1":1,"2":0,"4":1}]},"8":{"1":[{"1":2,"2":0,"5":[null,2,0]},{"1":0,"2":0,"3":3},{"1":1,"2":0,"4":1}]},"12":0,"14":[null,2,0],"16":11}">rogerian argument essay example that indirectly describes this topic.

However, society can hardly exist without social media as it will mean existing without information. Thanks to the media, the society reaches a high level of development and aims to advance. At the same time, society no longer relies upon their natural possibilities, trusting the accuracy of the media content, which may often be false. The media cannot be treated as a completely negative notion which has a bad influence on society. Media presents a set of cultural aspects that have high importance for the formation of attitudes, values, and consciousness of an individual. Modern media help people to save time, effort, resources and reduce the cost of funds. The only important thing is remembering to filter everything that is received with information.
