Re: Persuasive Writing/Presentations

Charisma and Persuasive are two different with similar outcomes. One might think of charisma as charming or someone having the ability to charm or sweet talking to get their way. The reason I used sweet talking is because sometimes people will say whatever they need to get what they want. Not fussing or complaining to get their way but rather using their outgoing personality or flattery to cause people to want to be around them.  Persuasive may get the same results as charisma but its technique is different or rather the approach is different. Persuasive tends to be a little forceful. Although someone might not totally agree with you or want to be around you, your ability to lure or sway would cause them to respond to you in a positive manner. For example, there have been times that I had my mind made up that I wasn't going to do something but because someone paints a picture of its the best thing I tend to go along with it. I have one niece who loves to eat at Olive Garden, she will paint this picture of why we need to go and I don't want to go. Somehow, she always win. She's persuasive and charismatic about her favorite restaurant.

Having this skill is important in business communication because you will be able to meet a vast number of people and build a lasting business relationship and even some personal relationship which are both important to any business.

One person I believe who have this skill is President Obama. He was able to I think persuade the people to trust in themselves and believe that they can have change. His beautiful smile and constant reassuring of their ability to have what they want allowed him to serve two terms.

The other is Michelle Obama. Michelle's ability to lead by example caused many American's to think healthy and take their health serious. She planted gardens and had healthier foods instituted into the schools.

Re: Re: Persuasive Writing/Presentations

Thank you for your post LaVonne. I really like the way explained the difference in charisma and persuasion.  I agree with your choice of persons who are highly charismatic.  However, remember there are highly charismatic persons who use this skill in a negative way, such as Hitler, Jim Jones, and a few of our current political figures. Would your friends perceive you as charismatic or persuasive? Or, would they say you are a little bit of both? I can tell you that my friends believe that I am more charismatic but can be persuasive in a pinch.

Good job!

Re: Persuasive Writing/Presentations

To me persuasion is authentic and charisma is deceitful. When you are persuading someone to do something it is straightforward and right to the point while using charisma is beating around the bush and sugar coating. Although charisma is seen as having charm it becomes negative when comparing to persuasion. The art of actually having to change ones mind makes persuasion and charisma one in the same no matter if positive or negative. Having this skill is important in business communication because everyone will not always agree with your ideas but it is your job to convince them you are right. This will come in handy when trying to recruit investors, sponsors, or distributors. Donald Trump is someone I think has charisma. He may not be charming to some but he has his ways of getting his point across. His boldness and no regard for others feelings allows him to appeal to a crowd in a different way. He uses his eccentric behavior to gather followers and get them to agree with his causes. It may not be the usual charisma we are used to but it is still charisma. Feminists who protest at Trump's meetings are persuasive. They use graphic yet accurate posters, marches, and speeches to get their point across and show evidence. Their tactics are almost demanding but straight to the point giving their audience the ability to relate and change their minds.

Re: Re: Persuasive Writing/Presentations

Your use of charisma was good, I only acknowledged how it can be seen as a trick and not necessarily a skill which is not always the case. You're right charisma can be sweet talking but not in a con artist kind of way.
