Re: Groups, Teams, and Leadership

As a team player, I understand the concept of working together for a common goal and the importance of synergy.  One of the

biggest difference between a group and a team is the way they operate to achieve a goal. A group can be made up of three or

more people who are a part of a department or unit but who work independently towards their common goal.  A team can be

made up of three or more people who each bring their skills to the table to work together to achieve a common goal.  Recently,

I worked on a team made up of four church members to develop a plan for an event that would provide free services to the

homeless.  Each team member had experience in some area of public service. Together our team developed a plan for a

successful event. Groups and teams are important to an organization because they bring people together from diverse

backgrounds, ethnicity, educational and skill levels to achieve a common goal for the good of an organization.

Willie, I commend you on being the kind of team leader that ask for input from your colleagues. So many leaders feel as if

they do not need any ideas or suggestions from team members, but a good leader will always make their members feel as if

they are important and a part of the process. One reason that teams within an organization are important because they

increase employee relations. Team members who come together for a task can bond with each other and gain respect for

one another.

Shari, it is good that you stand on your faith to see you through when you are in doubt.  I know that working with team

members can be a challenging task especially when they differ from one another in terms of skills and talents.   One thing

that teams must do for them to be effective is to build trust. Honest communication skills and gaining respect for each other

are ways to learn to trust your team members.  A successful team or group can achieve any task if they stay focus and stick

to the goal or objective.
