In this coarse i have learned the importance of strong communication both in and away from the work place.  Whether you are entry level or CEO of an establishment clear and concise communication is vital to your success.  I have learned how to structure a message and the function of each part of that structured message.  On a personal and professional level I have become more sensitive to unacceptable and offensive language that may have unknowingly hindered my success in communicating.  I have learned to avoid jargon and double speak as well as euphemisms in order to avoid communication breakdown or unintentional offense of a potential customer.  I have also become more familiar with the process of planning and the elements which are essential in a business document.  Lastly this coarse has taught me to be more aware of the demographic make up of my audience in order to keep my language and approach direct, sharp and relative.

According to the text, "communication is an activity, skill, and art that incorporates lessons learned across a wide spectrum of human knowledge." Communication can improve with if individuals apply time and effort. It is also important to consider our audience. Communication can also be verbal and non verbal.  We can prepare ourselves to excel in the workplace and socially by simply having an open mind. Embracing cultural, socio-economic, and value differences can only be beneficial. You have the opportunity to learn, share, and collaborate with people that could yield positive results. I have experienced this when working on many projects in work and school. I know that if I had not been in that environment different to what I was accustomed to, I would not view the world with optimism. These skills along with personal experiences will enable me to be an effective communicator in my personal and in the professional world.

What I have  learned from this course has to be the importance of being aware of how you are seen. So many times in my personal and business life I pay so much attention to what others are saying and doing that I often assume I am being perceived as I intended. As I look back on certain circumstances I could have resolved issues much more effectively if I viewed how I was coming off to others. With this course I have began to check myself and review not just what I am saying but how I am saying it. I have been guilty of saying one thing but my face saying something opposite. I also feel that now I understand the importance of being prepared and how to take presentation to the next level through the use of visual aids and elevator pitches. Overall this experience has taken my communication skills to a much more advanced level and made me more comfortable to communicate in a range of settings.

What I have learned from this course personally is that I need a lot of improvement with my communication skills. Some things you just don’t take very serious, and I realize communication was one of those things for me. I really never took much thought into. I realize it’s not just enough to carry on a conversation, but how is what you’re trying to communicate received. I also realized how important communication is through writing is. You can’t just throw words on a page and call it communication. After this course I am compelled to make a change.

What I have learned from this course professionally about communication is that certain jobs that you apply for employer watch this closely to determine if you are qualified for the job. They are looking at your body language, how you dress, your resume, and how you talk. From this course I realized that because of my lackluster attitude concerning communication I was passed up for a lot of good jobs.
